Very friendly bar, great staff, lovely terrace

The menu is simple, but all the dishes are delicious, well-prepared, and perfect for sharing. The terrace is spacious and overlooks a plaza, and the service is super friendly. A top spot in Marseille!

A lovely little family meal at a table on this charming neighborhood terrace. No complaints, the portions were generous, the staff were friendly from start to finish, and the prices were reasonable.

We fell upon Marius Bar after a couple of days in Marseille, desperately looking for a salad. Weirdly, for a city this hot in summer, good salads aren’t particularly easy to find. Then we saw a Caesar salad and a Marius salad on the lunch menu and thought: perfect, let’s try it. We had absolutely no idea what was coming. The Caesar was exquisite. Possibly the best Caesar in Marseille, although I’ll be cheeky and say the South of France. Elegant, subtle, beautifully balanced, everything freshly prepared, and made with a genuine desire to satisfy your palate rather than overwhelm it. Every bite was delicious. The Marius salad had the reverberations of a Niçoise without any of the chi-chi. Just fresh ingredients, beautiful flavours and pure simplicity. Perfection. We had to thank the chef, Bastien. He was so chilled and lovely, and there was something about his energy with his colleagues and the simplicity of the whole operation that made this unexpectedly one of our most banging food experiences in Marseille. After spending the next few days trying some of the city’s more hyped places, we desperately wanted to return to Marius, but kept missing the lunch service. Finally, on our last evening, we made it back. This time: grilled sardines and burrata with gazpacho. Again, sublime. The sardines had extraordinary depth and sat on a bed of fennel with an almost kimchi-like character. The gazpacho was out of this world. And this time we had to tell Bastien that basically we couldn’t live without him. Marseille in summer is hot, busy, bustling and beautiful, with a beating heart that has been going for more than 2,000 years. Somehow its salad scene doesn’t quite reflect those summer vibes. But Marius Bar does. Don’t expect anything elaborate. It’s wonderfully simple: essentially a neighbourhood bar that has been taken over and given a new energy. But what Bastien and the team are doing with that simplicity is way above their pay grade. The ingredients are fresh, the cooking has intelligence and restraint, and the prices are remarkably good for the quality of what arrives on your plate. For me, Marius is an incontournable in Marseille. Go for lunch. Go for dinner. Just don’t do what we did and keep missing the opening hours. And please tell Bastien we still can’t live without him.
