If you are in or planning a trip to the south of France the first thing to do once you have booked your trip is to get a lunch reservation at Couleurs de Shimatani. The race for the reservation starts 3 months out and if you are persistent and lucky you can secure a spot!! Wander the lovely streets of La Ciotat and then as if transported you will enter the kind and delightful world created by Mika and Yuichiro, a husband and wife team that run this 3 table location. Gentle and attentive service seamlessly threads the kitchen and customers together. The interior is clean, quiet and restrained. The neutral palette of the walls and tables is a perfect backdrop to the colorful dishes presented. The food created here is in a world of its own as well, wonderfully blending the most local and fresh French ingredients and flavors with Japanese techniques and accents. Each ingredient added is assembled with intention. Spectacular desserts finish off the meal. Days and weeks after you will find yourself recalling a beautiful dish and the flavors experienced on their plates. This is a restaurant which is absolutely worth the trip.
