La Croix d'Or sur Avranches

A lovely hotel with character. Attentive service. No air conditioning, which is a drawback during heatwaves but not necessarily the rest of the year.

Our dinner as a couple was thoroughly enjoyable, not only because of the delicious food (I recommend the beef cheek) but also because of the staff, especially the very attentive and courteous waiters. I highly recommend it!

A wonderful place where history, elegance, and fine dining come together. From the moment you step inside, you can feel that this is an authentic stone building with a long history. The interior is beautifully furnished with respect for its heritage – stone walls, solid wooden furniture, fireplaces, antique clocks, and countless period details create a truly unique atmosphere. This is not a modern hotel trying to look historic; it is a place where history genuinely lives. The restaurant was of a very high standard. White tablecloths, professional yet warm service, excellent English spoken by the staff, and a thoughtfully curated wine list organized by French wine regions. The team was knowledgeable and happy to help with wine selections. One of the highlights of our evening was enjoying a Calvados from 1989. The cuisine was excellent, and the dining room overlooking the beautiful garden made the experience even more memorable. The view through the large windows onto the greenery was stunning and added greatly to the charm of the restaurant. I must admit that, as cyclists travelling along the Véloscénie route, we felt slightly out of place in such an elegant setting. After a full day on our bikes, we arrived wearing shorts and T-shirts, while the atmosphere seemed more suited to a shirt and smarter attire. Fortunately, my wife was wearing a dress and did a much better job representing us. 😊 Despite this, the staff welcomed us warmly and professionally, and we quickly felt comfortable. It is fair to say that the quality of the restaurant is reflected in the prices, which are on the higher side. On the other hand, we were pleasantly surprised by the accommodation itself. Even the most basic room cost around €100 per night, which felt very reasonable considering the quality of the hotel, the service, and the overall experience. What impressed us most was the authenticity of the entire property. Every room has its own character, and the photographs only partially capture the atmosphere of the place. It is the kind of hotel where you find yourself slowing down and simply enjoying the surroundings. If you are looking for history, character, outstanding food, professional service, and a truly memorable setting, we can recommend this place without hesitation. It was one of the highlights of our trip through France.

Fantastic hotel with a great restaurant, a private car park with plenty of spaces, and a cozy courtyard with lots of greenery.

Stayed a few nights at this charming hotel in Avranches. The rooms are well-equipped, clean, and well-maintained. Very friendly staff. The hotel has its own restaurant where you can have both breakfast and dinner. Ample parking. The city center of Avranches is within walking distance, and there are quite a few interesting locations to visit in the region.

While passing through Avranches to visit family, we stayed 3 nights in this hotel and appreciated the comfort and tranquility of our stay. I highly recommend it.

My review concerns the restaurant we always enjoy visiting. Refined setting, impeccable service, and excellent cuisine. This time we tried the €48 menu, which was truly delicious, with meticulous presentation and cooking. The €35 menu is also perfect. The portions are generous without being excessive and are beautifully presented. A very pleasant experience and a warm welcome.
