04/06/2026: Halles de la Martinière began in 1838 as a municipal food market in two halls arranged around Rue de la Martinière. Butter, eggs, poultry and other provisions were sold inside, while the street kept public movement open between the halls. The southern hall burned in 1873, was rebuilt, then disappeared when the street was widened in 1903, leaving the surviving stone hall as a reduced remnant of that original market. Its columns, iron grilles, lantern and later glass reopening show a building repeatedly adjusted where food trade met the street. After closure in 2011, it reopened in 2017 with local products, eating on site and takeaway, though that reuse entered fresh uncertainty with the cooperative grocery’s 2026 liquidation.
19/04/2026: A reservation was made a month in advance for a birthday celebration, with clearly defined conditions (staggered arrivals, some guests not eating, and a shared space for food and drinks).
These details had been explicitly confirmed by the manager during the booking process.
Upon arrival, we received a cold welcome and a categorical refusal to organize a communal table, despite ample space. After a tense 10-minute exchange, a member of the team (likely the manager, with brown hair) made unpleasant, inappropriate, and even insulting remarks and adopted a tone that went so far as to call us "difficult customers," "the worst customers," and repeatedly reminded us that it was "no big deal," that if we weren't happy, no solution would be found, and that we could simply "leave." This person was exploiting the difficulty of changing the entire organization at the last minute for an event planned weeks in advance.
This was unacceptable, especially since everything had been agreed upon beforehand. The solution requested at the beginning was finally implemented… proof that it was possible from the start.
As for the service, the same issue persisted: no menus were given to guests, and they were required to get up to order and collect drinks, without any prior announcement or explanation. If the restaurant operates like a bar, this should be clearly stated from the outset. Here, nothing was clear, even though there were plenty of staff available.
There was very little follow-up at the tables (clearing tables, taking orders, attending to customers), in a restaurant that was surprisingly quiet that day.
It's hard not to connect this with the recurring complaints about the quality of service, especially on a sunny Saturday when all the other terraces are full.
It's a shame, because the food was good.
But overall, the experience was ruined by a clear lack of professionalism and respect in the dining room. We won't be returning.
P.S.: I should clarify that normally, if someone speaks to me this way, it's not simply a negative review that I write. Fortunately, the opportunity was too important to waste with any kind of altercation.
