A living Belleville treasure, a survivor from a bygone era Tai Yien (大元隆家), 5 rue de Belleville, is much more than a restaurant: it's a Proustian madeleine for anyone who grew up in the Asian Belleville of the 1980s. After more than 40 years, this legendary establishment is one of the very few survivors of a time when the neighborhood was the beating heart of Paris's Sino-Vietnamese community. I went back with my mother, and as soon as we stepped inside, we were enveloped by a sweet and powerful nostalgia: the same wooden tables, the same warm and unpretentious atmosphere, the same feeling of being somewhere authentic, untouched by time and trends. The house specialty is Cantonese rotisserie, and they master it to perfection. We ordered the Peking duck, served in generous chunks, its skin glistening and perfectly caramelized, its meat meltingly tender and fragrant, accompanied by a rich, slightly sweet homemade soy sauce. We also enjoyed the crispy roast pork (siu yuk), whose puffed, golden skin crackled as it should, revealing tender, well-seasoned meat. All of this was served with the traditional jar of pickled red chilies on the table, a detail that, in itself, encapsulates the spirit of these old-fashioned Asian eateries. The menu is generous and varied: beyond the rotisserie, there's a melt-in-your-mouth pork belly that falls apart at the touch of a fork, succulent lacquered and caramelized pork ribs, fragrant fried rice of a kind rarely seen anymore, and many other classics of traditional Chinese cuisine. Each dish is prepared with the care and precision passed down through generations, without ever trying to do too much. Note that the half-duck is also available for takeout, an excellent option for extending the enjoyment at home. And all this at a remarkably affordable price, which, in the heart of Paris, is almost miraculous for cuisine of this quality. The service also deserves praise: the young women who run the dining room are charming, attentive, and efficient, with a blend of naturalness and thoughtfulness that immediately puts you at ease. You feel welcomed like a regular, even after years away. In a Belleville that has profoundly changed, gentrified, and transformed over the decades, Tai Yien stands strong. It is the guardian of a collective memory, that of a working-class, multicultural, and vibrant neighborhood, the one many of us knew as children. Going back is like rediscovering a part of yourself. A rare gem, absolutely recommended to all those who love real roasted Cantonese cuisine, to those who seek unpretentious authenticity, and to all the children of Belleville, past and present.

I've been going there for over 20 years and I've never found such delicious food anywhere else, despite traveling extensively! There's one soup in particular that I almost always order. Plus, the team is fantastic! Well done!

It's undoubtedly one of the best Chinese restaurants in Belleville, and has been for over 40 years. But you can't order...

I'd walked past this restaurant several times, and I finally decided to go in today. I ordered the duck noodle soup and a portion of Peking duck. The duck was absolutely delicious, and the noodle soup broth was comforting and fragrant. The noodles, however, were just okay. The duck was definitely the highlight. The staff was very friendly. I would gladly go back.

The taste is back, much better than when the owner changed, but the seats near the entrance are too cold, and people keep coming in and going out.

06/03/2026: An Asian getaway in the heart of Paris! Everything was perfect in terms of setting and service! I'd give it a slight demerit of 4/5 for the cuisine, which I would have liked to be a bit more creative given the establishment's standing, but otherwise, I would gladly return for its ambiance, comfort, and tranquility!
28/02/2026: Good food, nothing spectacular. Impeccable, attentive, and friendly service. Superb view. But ultimately, very expensive for the experience.

26/03/2026: The restaurant cost a little over 100 for two people, about 50 per person. Location: Excellent location, near the Champs-Élysées, valet parking available. Ambiance: Currently, besides Shang Palace, this is the second best Chinese restaurant I've had. The fusion of Chinese and French styles is excellent. The overall decor and hard furnishings are French, while the soft furnishings are Chinese, featuring many Asian and Chinese artworks. Food: We ordered three dishes, a soup, and two bowls of rice. We ordered too much. 1. Cantonese Roast Duck: Crispy skin and plump meat. While not quite up to par with those in China, it's still one of the top three I've had in Paris. 2. Steamed Sea Bass: The fish was fresh, a simple home-style preparation, but the sauce was a bit too sweet. 3. Signature Beef Cubes (I think it's called Baixi Beef): The beef was very tender, stir-fried with a rich soy sauce and garlic, slightly charred on the outside and tender on the inside. It wasn't fully cooked, less than medium-rare. Those who don't like raw beef should avoid this. 4. White Asparagus and Crab Soup: The white asparagus was in season and very delicious, sweet, and the soup was quite flavorful. However, the thickening wasn't done well, making it very watery towards the end. Overall, it was pretty good; the environment was nice, and the food was decent. However, on my next visit, the service was poor; the food was served rudely and in a hurry. My good impression instantly vanished. 🔔There are two very cute dogs in the restaurant 🐶, very gentle and calm, not on a leash, roaming freely. Apparently, they are the manager; those afraid of dogs should be careful.
22/03/2026: It’s one of those addresses Parisians return to without needing to talk about. Neither new nor trendy, that’s precisely the point. Chez Ly has built its mini-empire on comfort and consistency, best enjoyed over a shared meal with friends. The pepper beef isn’t strictly traditional but hits the mark, while the butterfly shrimp offers a more refined take on a classic. The Peking duck remains a Paris benchmark: crisp, precise, unfussy. Prices sit in the upper bracket, but the quality of ingredients comes through in each dish. Choose between the revolving tables for old-school charm or a tucked-away table in the antechamber for a calmer, more private setting. Come for the duck, stay for the comfort.
