04/06/2026: Halles de la Martinière began in 1838 as a municipal food market in two halls arranged around Rue de la Martinière. Butter, eggs, poultry and other provisions were sold inside, while the street kept public movement open between the halls. The southern hall burned in 1873, was rebuilt, then disappeared when the street was widened in 1903, leaving the surviving stone hall as a reduced remnant of that original market. Its columns, iron grilles, lantern and later glass reopening show a building repeatedly adjusted where food trade met the street. After closure in 2011, it reopened in 2017 with local products, eating on site and takeaway, though that reuse entered fresh uncertainty with the cooperative grocery’s 2026 liquidation.
02/05/2026: I want to share my experience, this time as someone directly affected, since this lunch was organized for my birthday: a moment I had imagined to be friendly, simple, and joyful… which was ultimately completely ruined.
The reservation had been made more than a month in advance, with very clearly specified and agreed-upon conditions: staggered arrivals, some guests not eating, and above all, the possibility of having a common area to drink and share a moment together. Everything had been planned to ensure it went smoothly.
Upon our arrival, the welcome was extremely cold, almost hostile. We were immediately and categorically refused to set up a communal table, even though the space was more than adequate. A tense exchange ensued, during which a member of the staff was particularly unpleasant, with an inappropriate tone and unacceptable remarks. Being called “difficult customers” on my birthday, hearing that “no solution would be found” and that we could “leave” if we weren’t happy… it’s not only shocking, but deeply disrespectful.
What’s even more incomprehensible is that the solution initially requested was finally implemented afterward. This clearly proves that it was possible from the start, without unnecessary conflict. Why did it have to come to this?
From an organizational standpoint, nothing was clear: no menus for the guests, the requirement to get up to order without any explanation, no assistance whatsoever… The service was practically nonexistent, with very little follow-up at the tables, even though the establishment wasn’t even full.
In this context, it was difficult to enjoy the moment. And that’s precisely what’s most frustrating: beyond the logistical aspects, it was an important personal moment that was ruined. A birthday isn’t just a meal, it’s a memory. Unfortunately, this experience will forever be marked by a profound lack of professionalism and consideration.
Following this, I was contacted by one of the partners, Yohan, who wanted to discuss the situation. I responded immediately and made myself available for a call. Despite this, there was no follow-up, a missed call with no response, and my follow-up has gone unanswered to this day. This lack of follow-up is completely inconsistent with the initial approach and further reinforces the feeling of neglect and disregard for the customer.
It's all the more disappointing because the food was good. But this in no way compensates for the overall experience, which was disappointing from beginning to end.
I will not be returning, and I strongly advise against this establishment for any significant event.
