Prats-De-Mollo-La-Preste
01/10/2023: Very cramped room, small bed that you have to climb over too close to the wall, The bathroom is a 40cm gap between the sink and the wall to access the toilet. Only one bath towel and one small one, for two people. Cleanliness… black hair in the shower and sink and it’s not our color.
08/09/2023: This 3-star hotel hides an amazing secret: a Michelin-quality restaurant with a "Bib Gourmand Michelin 2023" recommendation at an unbelievably low price. Every year we make a 2 hour journey just to eat here for lunch, our favourite restaurant in the region - despite having a home close to a Michelin-starred restaurant in the next village! The hotel/restaurant is owned and run by a married couple, Mme Patricia Visellach being the Maître d', and Mr Denis Visellach the quite brilliant chef. We gather from the chef that he has deliberately chosen to avoid the strictures of Michelin stars and consequent knock-on impact on price, especially as Prats is a little out of the way for many people. This means that he has complete freedom to practise his ingenuity. The food is always inventive, invariably offering a wonderful blend of flavours. We generally go for the top fixed-price menu which this year was €72 including wines. As an example of a menu, in 2019 we had a starter of exquisite foie gras with a layer of apricot purée accompanied by slices of nectarine. The second course was visually extraordinary with a jet-black cod mashed, mixed with garlic and formed into a solid wedge that looked anything other than fish. It was accompanied by small pieces of seafood and a sauce. And it tasted fantastic! The third course was perfectly cooked beef steak in a mushroom sauce. Fourth course was a selection of cheeses and, finally, there was a mixed dessert of delicately flavoured meringue with the merest hint of aniseed, lemon ice cream, a soft biscuit and apricot accompaniment. Before and in-between some courses we also had amuse-bouches. You definitely won't come out hungry! We have also stayed the night at the hotel. The rooms are clean but basic, aimed at a different clientele, namely longer-term stayers who are there for the mountains. Be aware therefore that half- and full-board stays do *not* include the sort of menu described above. You will get good but more basic food. So if you want to spend the night *and* have a great meal, just go for bed and breakfast and buy the evening (or lunchtime) meal separately. My wife and I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. We'd give it ten stars if we could!
