Chez Fonfon sur Marseille

We had an amazing bouillabaisse dinner at Chez Fonfon last night. We sat near a window with a view of Vallon des Auffes and once we placed our order, the waiter came back to the table to show the ones who ordered the bouillabaisse, what seafood will be in our dish. The soup was delicious, hearty and rich in flavor, it was incredible! For wine, we followed the recommendations off of the menu. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and took good care of us. It was a wonderful dinner.

If you can't get into chez Michel this is a great alternative. Just as good.

Best traditional bouillabaisse in Marseille. For a price.

You need to pull yourselves together and stop resting on your laurels... dishes averaging €40-50, especially for rubbery octopus, slightly overcooked meat, and somewhat curt service... I've had much better experiences at your establishment...

Chez Fonfon is world famous for Boulabaise which my wife had, but I had Bouride, similar to Boulabaise but no tomato and with celery, (more)fennel and egg yolk. With each bowl you spread aoli on toasts and put them in the broth. And then you add from your plate of fish (according to season but we had) Monkish, Rockfish, Conger Eel, Sea Bream and boiled potatoes. They keep refilling the broth but we flaked out after one refill. For desert we shared a citrus pavlova. A perfect sweet yet sharp end to an indulgent meal

During his business trips about thirty years ago, my father used to come to Fonfon for his bouillabaisse. Since I was also in Marseille, my father naturally sent me to have dinner there. It seems the quality hasn't declined in all these years! I thoroughly enjoyed my red mullet as a starter, my bouillabaisse as a main course, and my apple tatin for dessert. I thought the presentation of the fish before eating it was lovely. The service was excellent, and the staff was incredibly pleasant. The setting is idyllic with its splendid view of the port. So yes, the prices are a bit high, but quality comes at a price! I already know where I'll be going back for my next trip. And as a bonus, I can bring back a little souvenir for my father!

The Gillardeau oysters are a must-order appetizer and are reasonably priced. The squid is excellent among the main courses.
