Hello, At the Palmarium site, I had lunch with a dear friend yesterday, Monday, March 30, 2026, in the midst of a valiant Tramontane wind. The hearty, robust dish of the day consisted of a sliced ​​cut of meat, cooked to perfection. I chose "bleu" (a type of beef) – tender and flavorful in texture and taste – a rich, dense, and comforting cheese gratin, a meltingly soft baked potato (a grainy variety?), and a small salad with a robust dressing. With a touch of humor, in this winter/spring setting with its harsh cold and/or wind outside, friends entering this beautiful site, please close the large double doors securely for the comfort of the gourmet guests seated near the door... Having enjoyed the Hippopotamus in Alès, we didn't hesitate to go back. The setting was pleasant, the welcome and service impeccable, and the staff professional. However, the food disappointed us. The portions were too small: three tiny lettuce leaves, a few fries, and three bites of the gratin dauphinois (which was far too dry). We weren't surprised, then, to find only a few tables occupied on a Friday night, while the other restaurants in the area were packed. Unfortunately, we won't be returning to the Hippopotamus in Alès upon our return from Spain, but we'll continue to frequent the one in Alès, which is almost always full. Perhaps a visit to the Alès Hippopotamus would be enlightening and beneficial for the manager.
