Incredible sea food, prepared with care and passion. Rating 5 for the flavor of the fresh food, and the time and dedication the people are putting in the food and experience that they serve the guests here. I can truly recommend this place if you come on time and reserve time for enjoying the food.

I have mixed feelings after going there for lunch today. I visited La Boîte à Sardine with my ex in June 2016. I was thrilled to be able to bring her son today, as it was a real treat the first time. We arrived around 2 p.m. There was still skate and sardines available. We were happy! Unfortunately, two women who arrived five minutes after us had made a reservation. Their order was therefore taken first. I'm almost six months pregnant, and of what was left when we arrived, I could only eat sardines or skate. Unfortunately, when the ladies took the last skate, there was only one portion of sardines left to share (but we had eaten well that morning, so it wasn't a problem). The waiter offered us a marinated anchovy sandwich to boost our order. I said I couldn't eat it because I'm pregnant and the anchovies weren't cooked. He insisted we order one. I didn't dare refuse him. When the sandwich and sardines arrived, I gave half the sandwich to my son and served us some sardines, leaving a little on the side. The sardines were delicious. The sandwich was complicated. It was in a fried bun (I can't tolerate fried food anymore since I've been pregnant) and contained marinated anchovies, green leaves, and grilled and marinated red pepper. My son doesn't like red pepper. I removed some, but he still didn't like the sandwich. So I gave him what was left of the sardines. The waiter came back. I explained the situation. He removed the anchovies and told me to eat the sandwich, which he said was very good. I ate a bite to be polite, but it wasn't very good. It was fried bread with a few pieces of bell pepper, some green leaves, and a little olive oil. There was no other option but to give up. I worked in restaurants for ten years when I was younger. I don't like to be difficult, but I expected a small gesture of goodwill when I paid, after being forced to order a dish I couldn't eat. I didn't get any compensation; I had to pay full price. I paid for a meal I couldn't even eat, and then I had to buy something else outside because I was still hungry. What's even more annoying is that when I left, I saw a woman sitting at the counter who had arrived long after us, eating a plate of panisse and cooked fish with a green sauce. Why didn't they offer me that dish instead of pressuring me to order something I couldn't eat, even if I wanted to? I'm not sure I want to go back there. It's a shame. The sardines were very good, but the way they handled the situation was poor, and I'm very disappointed with my experience.

Absolutely delicious. Local, fresh, and when it's gone, it's gone! The service is straightforward and reflects the restaurant's character: full of character and a passion for seafood. The ingredients are well-prepared, simple yet incredibly flavorful, and unpretentious. If you're looking for a seafood restaurant, look no further! Stopped by for a quick bite and it was really good. The food is fresh, especially the seafood, and the vibe is relaxed. It can get busy, but that’s part of the charm.

The oysters were soooo fresh. Everything was amazing. Will be a go to spot everytime I'm in Marseille as the menu is based off the daily catch of the local fishermen

This was my favorite restaurant during a four day visit to Marseille. Amazing fresh, super tasty, and local food - best oysters I’ve had in years - and the cooked dishes were delicious! Super fun atmosphere- the whole restaurant was seafood themed down to every detail including the plates and cutlery. One of the funnest parts of going here is that the owner personally serves you - including explaining the menu (in french or English) to each table. He’s funny and friendly! The menu changes daily depending on what’s available. Everything we ate was delicious (five dishes total for two people).

It's impossible not to give this restaurant five stars! I've read reviews from customers who complained about the owner and the service... so if you're looking for cutesy smiles and fuss, and you only have 45 minutes to eat, move on! If you want to eat in an unusual setting, with fresh, local seafood, cooked simply and with (enormous) talent, YOU ABSOLUTELY must go here. It's a crime of lèse-majesté to walk past without stopping (which I did for about ten years...🙄). The owner is very friendly, and will tell you with delight about the fish being cooked, its origins, and its taste. A little rough at first, but personally, I prefer that. More than reasonable prices, a limited selection that generally guarantees fresh produce, a very Marseille atmosphere, and wines that pair beautifully with the dishes served. €35/person for a starter, main course, and dessert, plus wine. The people I was with on Saturday have only one desire on their next visit to Marseille: to go back! Remember to book. For those who enjoy overpriced frozen fish, the old port awaits; it's full of sucker traps...
