Looking for a nice little restaurant before heading home, we saw L’Alexandra on New Year’s Eve. It had a simple and inexpensive menu.
We had a lovely time; the food was excellent. Just a minor criticism, and it's more of a personal observation: the chicken escalope with Maroilles cheese could have used a tiny bit more sauce. But it didn't detract from the overall experience. The side dish (gratin dauphinois) was also good.
The mussels and fries were also excellent, and the pizza was generously topped.
The smiling waitress was bustling about, but I think the sudden rush wasn't expected that Friday lunchtime. Good for them, though; I heard quite a few people raving about the presentation and the food.
The restaurant and its surroundings are understated, and the place is clean and well-maintained.
I don't know if they take reservations, but I think it's a good idea to book ahead to get a table.
We're noting the address for when we return to Calais.
Thank you.
The mule frites with Roquefort cheese were excellent! Contrary to other reviews, my beer was reasonably priced. You can see the prices on Google Maps.
Some criticisms:
Too cold in November, no heating,
The radio was playing a terrible station, but he turned it off.
A quirky, likeable guy who makes these shortcomings easy to overlook.
We ate very good mussels and fries, well done to the chef.
The waitress was very kind but completely exploited.
Yes, the owner didn't give her a hand and didn't even bother to take the money.
So the waitress is left to do everything alone.
Good luck to her.
Oh, I almost forgot, the owner is very good at swigging beers.
Long wait, glass that leaves something to be desired, we asked for a new clean glass, chicken escalopes with maroilles that don't taste of maroilles at all
