On the Way of St. James to Compostela!

We went to see the basilica because we were visiting Clermont-Ferrand, but we were disappointed.

Many don't visit it, and it remains overshadowed by the "Black Cathedral," but it's worth a visit for three reasons: the crypt, its ornate capitals (you won't find another like it), and its colorful stained-glass windows. In this basilica, the Catholic Church, then led by Urban II, held the famous Council of Clermont, which triggered the First Crusade to the Holy Land.

Beautiful basilica to see, free entry

A beautiful place full of history.

A very pretty basilica built of light limestone (with a slight Cluniac feel) which, from a distance, appears to be one with the cathedral (currently under restoration, summer 2026), even though it's not right next to it, nor very far away either, but with little space around it, unlike the cathedral where a large square offers numerous bars and restaurants 👍😉

A building with distinct phases of construction, each clearly marked by its style... Recently renovated, it includes a fun and informative space about the basilica's history, among other things... It hosted an exhibition of giant portraits painted by Patrick Marquès in 2026...

A truly beautiful basilica. Free entry for everyone. You can stroll around at your leisure and admire this beautiful place. At the back of the basilica, there's a room where artworks are displayed, and even some small games: mosaic puzzles, building the basilica with blocks, etc. Great fun for both children and adults!

A splendid Romanesque basilica. It is part of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela route in France. The crypt with the Black Madonna is particularly beautiful. The panoramic viewpoint is temporarily closed to the public.
