Le Quai Gourmand sur Saint-Brieuc

29/04/2024: I had done plenty of research for our visit to St. Brieuc and 'Le Koadenn' stood out for a different experience. The pictures of the food looked fabulous, the menu with its wood fired cooking very tempting, and the reviews praiseworthy. In fairness, the way the building has been done out is lovely and it is full of atmosphere and character. When we arrived the restaurant was packed and we were given a pleasant table where we could appreciate the room. We ordered a variety of red, white and rose wine and it was all very reasonably priced. We ordered a variety of starters comprising the scallops, fish soup and pate de campagne and it was all very tasty with a basket of bread to share. My wife didn't want to eat a lot so ordered a galette with ementhal cheese and onions topped with a fried egg as her main course. She enjoyed it. My daughter in law went for the fillet steak which was disappointing and my son and myself went for the mixed grill. The sausage with the mixed grill was very juicy as were the thin slices of pork on a skewer. The chicken had dried out and not particularly pleasant and I couldn't be bothered with the small piece of tough, dry steak so left it. The main courses, other than the galette were disappointing. Three of us had some frites accompanying the meal and these were greasy and limp and we left most of them. It wasn't an expensive night out at 59 Euros a head including wine, but perhaps I had built it up unrealistically so it fell short. One strange thing was that as the restaurant was so busy, the corridor leading to the toilets had a long table almost filling the corridor with a group of perhaps 16 men all dining, meaning that going to the toilet necessitated pushing past them and disrupting their meal. I don't know whether this is a regular occurrence or just a one off but it wasn't the best customer experience. Service itself was pleasant enough and efficient but on the strength of last night, we all agreed that sadly, we didn't make the correct choice for dining in St. Brieuc.
