The setting was superb, we tried the 5-course menu, and the new menu is fantastic! A big thumbs up for the veal, which was exceptional, and the chestnut velouté; the dessert was excellent. A huge congratulations to the team for their beautiful, refined, and elegant cuisine.

Le Patio was recommended to us through Le Guide des Gourmands, and we went for lunch on 16 July. From the outside, you could very easily walk past it. The entrance is surprisingly unassuming, almost office-like, and gives absolutely no indication of what is waiting behind it. And then you discover the patio. It is spectacular: a secluded Mediterranean courtyard with a beautiful olive tree at its centre. Completely unexpected from the street and probably one of the loveliest outdoor restaurant spaces we discovered in Sommières. Suddenly the name makes perfect sense. Booking was very easy by phone the day before, although I understand they fill up quickly. We arrived at midday, so the restaurant was still almost empty when we sat down. We chose the set menu: one starter, a choice between two mains and dessert, if you still have room. It did not disappoint. The salade piémontaise was divine. The beef was genuinely out of this world, beautifully cooked, generous and full of flavour. And somehow we found room for the café gourmand, which was exceptional. One detail I particularly loved was discovering that one of the women serving us was also the restaurant’s pastry chef. There was something wonderfully unpretentious about being served by the person who had actually made part of what we were eating. And then came the bill. For the quality of the cooking, the price was surprisingly low. This is something I really value. Eating shouldn’t have to be expensive, and eating well shouldn’t automatically become a luxury. Le Patio is proof that skilled cooking, good ingredients and generous food can still be offered at a sensible price. My only criticism of the restaurant itself would be the interior décor, which feels strangely disconnected from everything else. It is quite generic, almost reminiscent of a chain hotel, when the cooking, service and magnificent courtyard have so much personality. I gave only one star for atmosphere, however, and I want to explain why because it isn’t a reflection of the staff or that beautiful patio. I am a mixed-heritage woman and, particularly when tanned, visibly a woman of colour. As the restaurant filled up, I became increasingly aware of a number of customers repeatedly looking at me. It happened enough that I began to feel conspicuous and not entirely at ease. I cannot know why anyone was looking at me and don’t want to assign motives to strangers. I can only describe how it felt to be on the receiving end of it. The clientele that afternoon was also noticeably homogeneous, and I found myself wishing for a more diverse and cosmopolitan mix of people. In such a beautiful setting, that would have completely transformed the atmosphere for me. This is particularly striking because Sommières itself became one of my favourite places in the region. It doesn’t suck the energy out of you. It isn’t trying desperately to impress. It feels lived-in, human and real, and the people and independent businesses we encountered there were a huge part of why we fell in love with it. And I would absolutely return to Le Patio. The cooking was excellent, the value remarkable, the service warm and that hidden courtyard with its olive tree is magical. I hope more people from every background discover it.

The food was extremely good, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The dining room and patio are truly beautiful, but the restaurant is difficult to find, and the exterior doesn't live up to what's inside!
