Some famous bookstores have become more tourist trap than bookstore. Not so with Smith & Son. This English language store in Paris maintains its French charm. Great selection. Very helpful staff. Charming café. While Smith & Son is deservedly popular, it is spacious and not so packed with people that you can't browse comfortably. If you're looking for a great English language bookstore in Paris that maintains its French feel, this is the place.

It's always a pleasure to visit this bookstore; I almost feel at home! The staff is always incredibly welcoming, warm, and attentive (including the waitresses in the café on the first floor!). Special mention goes to the gentleman with curly hair (whose name I unfortunately don't know, as I didn't think to ask), who was very kind, patient, and accommodating when I exchanged a defective book. On several occasions, he also took the time to recommend books to me and present them to me carefully and in detail. This kind of attention is truly appreciated. :))
On the other hand, the service at the checkout is a stark contrast to the rest of the experience. The person who handles it, who seems to be a new employee, has a very curt and cold demeanor and speaks to customers in a sharp and impersonal tone. I hope this will improve over time, as this last impression doesn't reflect the otherwise very pleasant atmosphere of the bookstore.
I'm still giving it 5 stars, because this checkout experience isn't enough to make me forget everything I appreciate about this bookstore.

tough to find English book stores in Paris (at least for me). this place, if I am not mistaken, is a british chain. the variety was good with good selections. prices were moderate and worth it as well. the atmosphere is very similar to many modern bookstroes so you will not find here unique atmosphere but at least you will find your book in English :-). the staff are very nice and helpful and although there is 1 cashier, the lne was short when I was there.

It's hard to leave this bookstore without one or two novels in hand. A perfect place to improve your English reading skills thanks to its diverse selection.
And what would a bookstore be without its café, perfect for tea time with your new acquisitions, while enjoying a scone :)
