Abbaye du Thoronet sur Le Thoronet

We knew Silvacane and Senanque from our 2022 tour. Today the 3rd Cistercian Abbey and it tops everything. This absolutely simple place radiates so much peace and strength. I probably know 100 similarly old churches, but this one immediately came in first place. We took the tour and at the end of the tour the guide demonstrated the unique acoustics. A goosebumps moment and there was immediately absolute silence

A necessary detour when passing through the area. A place of peace and serenity. The whole with the cloister and the buildings, so imposing in its beauty and purity, of Romanesque architecture, gives a striking impression of what the life of the Cistercian monks and lay brothers could have been like at the time.

I only visited the shop because for me the entry is too expensive.

A very beautiful place, which is best visited accompanied by a guide. Emmanuelle was an excellent guide and made us appreciate the acoustics of the abbey by singing there. A unique moment!

Embark on a fantastic journey into the early life and work of the first Cistercian monks in Le Thoronet. Let yourself be enchanted by a world full of mysticism, a world far away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. (This was already true in the 12th century ;-)) ). The simple life of the Cistercians can serve as a model for us today for a fulfilling life. This life consists of very simple and simple rules. And allows every person to find themselves. These are a fixed daily structure, times for prayer, times for work, times for meditation and dialogue and exchange with one another, sufficient breaks (times for idleness) and enough sleep. This set-up is very successful. The monks and lay brothers concentrated on the essentials, focusing in silence and seclusion on viticulture, the extraction of olive oil, the study of their writings, architecture and mathematics. A wonderful example is the very simple three-aisled church in Romanesque style with wonderful acoustics. Attend one of the concerts if at all possible! Take enough time, at least 1.5 hours, and enjoy the silence in this beautiful place. These are my impressions from a single visit. There is certainly much more to discover. Stay curious!

Beautiful Cistercian abbey. Located in the Provençal hinterland, it is worth the detour, particularly out of season, which allows you to enjoy a monastic tranquility ideal for visiting. During guided tours, some guides sing in the abbey church, which has phenomenal acoustics. Very pretty and very different from its white sister from Sénanque.
