The Abbaye du Thoronet is a fascinating masterpiece of medieval architecture. Nestled in the wooded hills of the Var department in Provence (southern France), it is considered, along with the abbeys of Sénanque and Silvacane, one of the three famous Cistercian sisters of Provence ("Les trois sœurs provençales"). The Architecture: The Geometry of Silence Those entering the Abbaye du Thoronet will search in vain for opulent gold decorations or colorful stained-glass windows. The Cistercians made radical asceticism their duty. Pure Form: The beauty of the church derives purely from its proportions, perfect geometry, and precise stonemasonry. Light as Decoration: Since there are no wall decorations, sunlight becomes the central design element. Depending on the time of day, the incoming rays fundamentally change the atmosphere of the space. The Cloister: It is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved in Provence. Its heavy Romanesque arches enclose a courtyard that exudes absolute tranquility. The Magical Acoustics An absolute highlight of the abbey church is its echo. Due to the smooth, bare stone walls and the unique shape of the vault, the space has a reverberation time of approximately 10 to 12 seconds. Fun Fact: In the past, the monks were not allowed to speak in their daily lives. Their only form of expression was communal singing. The acoustics in the Thoronet forced the singers to sing extremely slowly and precisely – any wrong note would have mercilessly hung in the air for seconds. Even today, musicians from all over the world use this space for unique recordings. A Brief Look at History Founded around 1160: Construction began in the late 12th century. The monastery provided space for about 20 monks and several dozen lay brothers who worked the land. Decline and Rescue: During the French Revolution, the monastery was abandoned and fell into ruin. However, in the 19th century, it was rediscovered by the famous writer Prosper Mérimée (then a preservationist) and painstakingly restored. Inspiration for Modernism Hard to believe, but this medieval monastery has profoundly influenced modern architecture. The renowned architect Le Corbusier visited Thoronet extensively in the 1950s. He was deeply impressed by how so much emotion could be evoked from pure stone, light, and shadow. His famous Sainte-Marie de la Tourette complex is directly based on the impressions he gained at Thoronet. Conclusion: If you are ever in Provence, the Abbaye du Thoronet is an absolute must-see – even if you are not usually interested in churches. It is less a traditional museum and more a place to be experienced with all your senses.

Beautifully restored abbey, but a little expensive for the size of the building.

A must-see, just like its sister abbey of Senanque. This national heritage site reveals the essence of Cistercian life and rule. Surrounded by a forest, it's a place worth visiting, and the drive there is also enjoyable.
