Are you looking to eat where the locals eat? Are you up for having an authentic experience, not a Disneyfied one? Are you looking for good food, made with fresh ingredients, simply prepared at a fair price? La Rotonde could be just what you're looking for. No reduction of this, deconstructed that, or essence of lord knows what. I was blessed by serendipity with this little gem. A few blocks away from the main tourist area, found by walking down well lit, shop strewn, fairy book alleyways worn down by generations of locals. At lunch I ordered the menu de jour, which consisted of an astounding onion tart with a soft cheese topping, a simple salad with balsamic dressing, followed by a perfectly poached fish on a bed of rice. Every single ingredient screamed of freshness and quality, and the simple preparation let that shine through. All accompanied by a lively wine suggested by the barman, it was lovely. Finished off with a strawberries and cream concoction with crumbles of some sort with a nice coffee that made me want to start the experience all over again. The staff was welcoming, friendly and patient with my lack of french. If I were a local in Narbonne I have no doubt but that I would be a faithful regular at La Rotonde. If you want a curated, made for tourist experience, or are just looking to go someplace and complain that "thats not they do it at home" go elsewhere, let these people be. If I hear of you mistreating them, I will find you.
