Great find! The food is delicious, well-cooked, and beautifully presented. Professional and helpful waiters (Yann and Richard). The owner (Romain) is friendly and approachable.

There are places that defy explanation. We don't really choose them either, for that matter. They choose us. For me, Maison Pignol is like that. Just today, I had lunch there with my father. Like we've done since I was old enough to reach the table with my elbows. The same aroma of slowly brewing coffee, the same voices mingling with the clinking of cutlery and the "Hi, how are you?" called out from one table to another. Here, you don't come to "discover" or to "have an experience." You come because it's necessary. Like coming home, except here they know you by your first name (or "Joel's son" if you're under 35). The daily special is always good, never exceptional, always comforting. The terrace is too small as soon as the weather's nice, and that's just fine: it creates this joyful chaos where everyone ends up talking to everyone else. I've been coming here forever. I've had coffee here alone after breakups, coffee with friends after exams, coffee with my dad after… anything and everything. It's not the most beautiful place in the world. It's not the most Instagrammable. It's just mine. And today, watching my dad fold his napkin the way he's done for the last 40 years, I had the same thought I always do: Damn, I'm so lucky this place still exists. If you're ever in the area, pop in. Not to criticize. Just to understand what it's like to have a real "home" that doesn't belong to you.
