An iconic landmark in the heart of Rennes' historic center! The Mordelaises Gates offer a true journey back in time, with their medieval towers and beautifully restored ancient stones. Perfect for a stroll, photos, or a peaceful break in a corner steeped in history. A must-see to discover the city's old-world charm! 🏰
Ancient red brick wall that protected and surrounded the city.
Although only one gate remains today, consisting of one for carts and one for pedestrians, there were originally four, one at each of the cardinal points.
In ancient times, they were not only used to enter the city but also to defend its entrance. You can still see their drawbridge today.
During the French Revolution, it was used as a prison and renamed Marat Gate in honor of the revolutionary.
These gates also have symbolic value, as the future Dukes of Brittany entered through them to be crowned at St. Peter's Cathedral.
Their history is very interesting, and today the surroundings are being restored.
Rennes is a very pretty city 😊 superb walk on Saturday morning with the traditional galette saucisse😜 This city is very lively and full of surprises! Too bad that nothing is done for all the homeless people lying on the steps of the churches, with scary dogs, fights and alcohol as a companion... We didn't really feel safe... too bad 🥹
