Hippopotamus Lille sur Lille

Superb, friendly restaurant, well located and not far from the opera house. A lovely dinner for two, with a choice of set menus at a reasonable price. 5 stars all around, well deserved.

Nice place, cozy atmosphere, and friendly service. The only downside was the meat. We ordered medium, but it was really raw. I think it's a French thing, because we've had this before in France. Not exactly what we're used to. Everything else was very tasty, though.

Where to begin… Hippopotamus was quite a disappointing experience for us. We'd been wanting to try it for a while, as the restaurant's menu looked particularly appealing. And since we love to linger over a meal, we were surprised by the (too) fast service – you see, we've never left a restaurant so quickly before. Anyway, moving on. The most important point we want to emphasize is how disappointed we were with our meal. The dish I ordered – a "original" hash – was much smaller than what was shown on the menu (if that's an XL steak, I'm afraid I know what a normal-sized steak looks like). Moreover, the price of the meal seemed, in retrospect, truly unreasonable, considering that the contents of the plate are the same as a hamburger but without the bun (all this for €5 more than a burger, mind you). As for the Béarnaise sauce… it had no flavor, was too runny, basically just tarragon soup. We should have ordered mayonnaise. One of the only positive aspects of the meal was the chips – served free of charge. That was a really nice touch.

It's always a pleasure to eat at Hippopotamus; I come for the same thing every time: the high-quality cuts of meat and the absolutely delicious pepper sauce. As always, I'm very satisfied with my meal and the service. A special shout-out to Elodie who served me—she's lovely, smiling, and efficient! 😁

I always enjoy going to L'Hippopotame; the service is pleasant and the staff are very friendly. One small drawback: the windows should be sealed with silicone or something similar, as we were initially seated at a table next to one, and we could feel the drafts. Not ideal in winter...

A great place to head for of you fancy a decent steak. It's busy but the tables are turned around quickly. A good selection of starters and desserts as well a decent drinks menu. I had the steak au poivre. Whilst it didn't look as presentable as the picture on the menu, I couldn't fault the food. The waiter forgot my water and it's one of the only times in France I've eaten and not been given bread. The carafe of red wine was served VERY cold. Overall, good food, but a few tweaks needed to the experience in order to get 5 stars

It had been a long time since I'd been there and I was disappointed. The wait to be seated was far too long (I had a reservation), and the same was true for the table service. There was a lot of noise around us and the food wasn't great.

The meal was very good, we ate well; however, the waitress was horribly rude, giving us dirty looks and sighing, bringing our drinks and food without a word—super unpleasant…it kind of ruined our experience, which is a shame because we ate well.

Very slow service. Tables that arrived after us were served before us.
