La Fontaine de Mars sur Paris

This restaurant is absolutely excellent, but it can be a little noisy. It is perfect for reunions with friends, but less so for business discussions.

Very nice staff and very nice food

Published on Instagram (ericpaname) 1,800 m long, rue Saint-Dominique crosses the 7th arrondissement of Paris, from boulevard Saint-Germain to Champ-de-Mars. You can admire a multitude of private mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries, notably the one housing the Ministry of Defense (Hôtel de Brienne), as well as two embassies (Paraguay and Romania) but it is at 129 that I join the Fontaine de Mars, created in 1908 in the immediate vicinity of a very real fountain of the same name, also called the Gros-Caillou fountain, built a century earlier. Octagonal terracotta tiles, oak furniture, red and white checkered tablecloths, a real decor that is both family-friendly and Parisian, which exudes the lively conviviality of the good inns of yesteryear. A generous blackberry kir, a few slices of sauciflard and raw salted butter from the Beillevaire cheesemaker's wooden churn give me time to dissect the menu. A weekly planner for daily specials, starters, specialties, main courses and essentials, a slate provided in addition, fish, not forgetting a vast choice of seafood. I'm wavering and salivating but don't know what to choose. December being the month of peak hare season, I try the homemade game terrine with foie gras and fig chutney. Accompanied by pickles in their jar and a suitable red Sancerre La Croix du Roy 2018 from Domaine Lucien Crochet, it is enormous but I stand up to it and suddenly come across a lead, proof that the hare does not come from the breeding. Next comes the chicken supreme with morels, morel cream and pilaf rice, a tender delight rich in ascomycetes. The dessert menu is just as welcoming as its main sister. A Landes tourtière, apple prune and Armagnac ice cream will remain in the theme of the day. In the end, an excellent excuse to nap all afternoon while waiting for the next feast that evening. All the same, count on almost €100 for this unassuming joke. The Fountain of Mars is really not a joke.

La Fontaine de Mars is one of the best in Paris, never dissapoints! All the dishes are delicious, seabass, beef tartare, chicken with morilles but confit de canard is to die for:) also oysters…

Love this place! Authentic French restaurant. When you come in, be in your best spirit, smile, indulge in the atmosphere, language, food and the staff. We had the best conversations with all the waiters. The host was the most special, he cut our kids food, and treated us like family. Thank you, thank you!

Quintessential French restaurant. The food was impeccable and the wine list perfection. We enjoyed the fois gras, chicken with morels, cassoulet, duck confit. Every dish was mouth watering. Our waiter Suresh made wonderful recommendations (one of the few English fluent staff). The staff sang happy birthday to one of our guests which kept things light and fun even though it was a very old school French restaurant. Will be returning every time I am in Paris.

Nous adresse préférée dans ce coin du 7e. Adresse que nous fréquentons souvent comme nombre de fidèles habitués, tant l’atmosphère et la cuisine y sont réconfortantes. Jamais déçus et toujours sûrs que ce sera parfait ! L’équipe elle aussi fidèle, y est pour beaucoup : sa sympathie et son dynamisme sont toujours au rdv ! Vivement notre prochaine fontaine de mars (et sa célèbre île flottante en dessert) !
