La Mere Jouvenceaux sur Louhans

The calf's head was a delight. A generous portion, and the service was incredibly fast. Never disappointed. Don't forget to book, especially on Mondays, market day, as it's a popular spot.

The first thing that struck us upon sitting in the conservatory was the sewer smell, confirmed by our neighbors at the next table. We eventually got used to it, although there were occasional lingering odors. The second surprising thing was the price of the set menu: €26, whereas it's listed at €20.50 on the website... but we didn't mind... A pleasant little Viré Clés (a local specialty) as an aperitif... Then came my egg meurette... well, the poached egg was replaced by a baked egg. The meurette sauce was good, but the toasted bread, oh my god, was incredibly dry... Next came the calf's head, which must have learned to swim because it was swimming in a rather poor ravigote sauce. That alone was enough to make me sick. The vegetables: three bland half-potatoes and two carrots cut into thin strips, meant to be crunchy but mostly raw... the meat was overcooked. I barely touched my plate. In fact, I left half my plate, and believe me, that's not like me. This restaurant will never see me again.

To our great surprise, we were charged an extra €5 for the morels in our "morel" chicken and €3 for the chili pepper in the "chili" chicken. Outrageous!

Lunch this Sunday. Eggs meurette for a starter, decent but lukewarm. Then calf's head which, unfortunately, was swimming in some kind of sauce. A gargantuan portion, but not what we were expecting. The desserts were equally enormous. Sorry, but this isn't the place we'll remember from Louhans.

My partner and I ordered the Bressan menu; everything was good, there was a bit of a wait, and perhaps some background music on Valentine's Day would have been nice.

Excellent place, a little bit unpretentious, just right. The service was responsive and very welcoming, the calf's head was sublime. Generous portions. I highly recommend it. The added bonus: dogs are welcome.

Lunch stop on the road. Average, nothing special.
