Excellent restaurant showcasing imaginative creative food using fresh local ingredients. Great service delivered by the engaging and knowledgeable patron. Advice for which best value wine we would enjoy was spot on.

A very warm welcome, excellent, inventive, and refined cuisine. Portions were perfectly sized for average appetites, but ample enough for senior diners! The service was friendly and attentive: no downtime, but not too rushed either.

We chose Bistro Urbain because of its Michelin Guide listing, which has been our benchmark for restaurants throughout this trip in France. We arrived at 7:30pm for the dinner service and were attended to by a casually dressed waiter (we felt perhaps a little too casual for this style of restaurant). The dining room was brightly lit throughout the evening, and although the large windows were open for fresh air, it was a humid, thundery night, so the room grew increasingly warm as it filled up. The two waiters handled the room reasonably well, though we noticed some diners waiting a while for service. We had to ask for our first water. We ordered the three-course tasting menu with matched wines. Some dishes felt unbalanced in their flavour profiles. For example one starter was Mediterranean Tuna Carpaccio (on menu as barbecue grilled pastrami, candied lemon, heirloom tomato gazpacho & miso icecream). Fortunately we couldn’t identify the pastrami but the dish left us with a distinct watermelon after taste. In our opinion, the wine pairings were not always well matched to the dishes. We've eaten at a number of Michelin-listed restaurants this week across different towns including others in Montpellier, all at similar price points, and this was the least interesting of them.

Fantastic find! The atmosphere is really lovely, the staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. A perfect place to eat in a convivial setting, I highly recommend it and will definitely be back!
