Thus, a restaurateur is required to offer a carafe of water free of charge once an order has been placed. Asking to pay for water is illegal. In addition, since the AGEC law, catering establishments and drinking establishments are required to visibly indicate on their menu or on a display space the possibility for consumers to request free drinking water. Establishments must provide their customers with access to fresh or temperate drinking water, suitable for drinking purposes. Making your customers (mostly foreign) believe that French water must be “micro-filtered” is dishonest and does not contribute to the reduction of plastic waste.
