Restaurant L'insolite sur Caen

Delicious, high-quality cuisine, fresh produce carefully selected by the owner. He gave us a warm welcome. A must-try if you want a truly delicious meal.

We had a wonderful meal at L'Insolite; the food was excellent and delicious! I highly recommend it.

An unusual place: the name is omen. The decor, the owner, the staff serving you at the table (in Bermuda shorts!), etc. Everything is unusually original. The kitchen prepares very good dishes. We had six (very fresh) oysters, unusually served on a plate without crushed ice, opened, but with the mollusk still attached to the shell; a homemade pâté accompanied by an unusual Corsican fig jam; an exquisite sole meunière, which, however, I had to manage myself (usually, for 38 euros, they clean it and serve it boned on the plate). To accompany the sole, we had baked potatoes, unfortunately unpeeled, as has been the custom these days (but did you know that the skins trap almost all the chemicals and fungicides that farmers now spray in large quantities?). And to finish, a Norman crèpe flambéed with Calvados, also of high quality. Bill: less than 100 euros, so good

We entered the restaurant with a bit of skepticism. Indeed, the owner, sitting by the entrance with his beer, wasn't exactly the most welcoming host, but that was the only criticism we had. The service was quick and the staff were well-informed about the wines, not automatically recommending anything too expensive. The house salad, though a little unconventional, was very appealing and harmonious. The fish and mussel tartare as a starter was almost a bit much, but very well seasoned! The fish dishes on the menu were cooked to perfection, the sauces well-balanced and not overloaded with cream. The dessert (pineapple or cheese) was just the right amount. Overall, a very enjoyable evening, not on a shoestring budget, but worth every penny. One suggestion: when paying by card, it would be nice to have the option to leave a well-earned tip, as not everyone carries cash.

We very much enjoyed a hearty lunch here. The menu is indulgent, generous and well priced for the quality you get. I enjoyed a large plate of fresh seafood - the oysters were particularly delicious - and then a bowl of the famous tripes à la mode de Caen. It was my first time eating this but it was utterly sensational - I recommend it very highly. The house cider was also very well chosen - the best we tasted in Normandy. I don't know why the reviews aren't better online - the owner was a little gruff on arrival, but perfectly pleasant once we'd eaten and enjoyed his tripe. Indeed, he treated us to a coffee on the house. Not a place to miss!

Excellent restaurant in the Vaugueux district, very pleasant, dining on the terrace was much appreciated during the heatwave. Very warm welcome, excellent service, generous portions, the seafood platter was very generous, we opted for the lobster Navarin, which was excellent. Highly recommended.

Excellent restaurant! I ordered a risotto, the best I've ever had. Delicious! My husband ordered beef cheek, cooked to perfection with a succulent sauce. The dessert was equally good: a flambéed crepe, a pleasant surprise! The staff was friendly. We found the wine (by the carafe) a bit pricey, but no regrets, we'll be back.

Very mixed feelings... On the one hand, a lovely menu, beautiful dishes, and great flavor. A table on the terrace was immediately available. All of this was spoiled by very slow service, an hour for a single course (hence the lukewarm tripe). Furthermore, there was a certain insistence on not having ordered wine or appetizers. But given the wait and these "heavy-handed" remarks, the desire to leave outweighed the pleasure of staying longer.

We had a wonderful time as a family with the children! The team is welcoming, energetic, and passionate. The food is authentic and delicious: tripe à la mode de Caen and linguine with seafood! We highly recommend it!
