La Moule Rit sur Dunkerque

A very good restaurant in its category. I loved the set menu: mussels (marinière style) – fries cooked in beef fat – chocolate waffle – drink – coffee. The service was quick, both for taking our order and for the food to arrive. The mussels were generous and delicious, the fries were tasty, the waffle light, and the chocolate was mouthwatering. All for €26. What more could you want? The coffee wasn't a Nespresso, but it was good and served with a speculoos biscuit (a must in Flanders).

This is our third year vacationing here in Malo, and one thing remains constant: the smiling mussel. But it doesn't smile for long, because it's so fresh and quickly devoured, just like the seafood aperitif and the fantastic dessert (crème brûlée and dame blanche) at the unbeatable Formule, which would make even a king (roi de la mule) envious. What's constant is the high quality of the food, the charming service (I feel like I've known these guys for three years and watched them grow up, albeit not in a muscular way), and the price of the Formule or le Formoule rit. I've said my goodbyes until next year.

Honestly, if you like well-cooked and very varied mussels, this is the place to go! We really appreciated the quality and quantity.

If you ever find yourself in Dunkirk wondering how many mussels one person can reasonably eat, La Moule Rit is the place to find out (answer: more than you think). I went for the mussels—because when in France, you don’t mess about—and they were absolutely spot on. Fresh, flavourful, and served in a portion that felt like a personal challenge. No complaints here, I rose to it bravely. Service was genuinely excellent, even with my “creative” French and their (very patient) English. There was a lot of smiling, nodding, and mutual goodwill—which somehow made the whole experience even better. It’s amazing what can be achieved with a few words and a strong commitment to food. All in all, fantastic meal, great atmosphere, and a reminder that good food doesn’t need perfect language skills—just a healthy appetite. Would definitely come back… possibly after a short break to recover from the mussels.

When I was planning my trip to Dunkirk, I also used Gemini AI. It recommended this restaurant to me. It would be nice to be able to make reservations online or via email. So I asked my wife, who speaks a little French, to make a reservation over the phone. In the end, everything went perfectly. I translated the menu using Google Lens. The selection of mussels is really extensive. We went with the menu that included dessert. The portion of mussels was so large that I couldn’t even finish it. They tasted great, and so did the fries. I was so full that after eating a delicious dessert, I could barely roll out of there. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Honestly, this is one of the few mussel restaurants where I FINALLY leave feeling full… and believe me, I'm not one for nibbling 😅 First off, the welcome immediately puts you at ease: warm, natural, and unpretentious. Then, the service is incredibly efficient, quick, and always with a smile; you can tell the team knows their stuff. But the real highlight is obviously the food: a huge selection of mussels, with variations to suit all tastes. This is far from your average menu; there's creativity, generosity, and above all, quality. The portions are substantial, the fries are perfectly cooked, and the whole experience is very reasonably priced. And a final word: 👉 The Laughing Cow should watch out… because here, clearly, it's the Laughing Mussel that's the star! 😄 An address I highly recommend, especially if you have a hearty appetite!
