Le 44 sur Chalon-Sur-Saone

We were on our way to Starbucks when we passed by number 44. We decided to give it a try; the decor is nice, the welcome is warm, and the waitresses are friendly. The cakes are homemade, which is a plus compared to the big chains, and they're really delicious. However, the drinks were a disaster: a tasteless coffee, a smoothie that tasted more like water than a smoothie, and when you make a proper chai latte in a tea room, you infuse the tea directly in the milk. What we got was nothing more than tea with a drop of milk in it, and frankly, it had absolutely no flavor. I find it really disappointing that for the same price as a big chain just 10 meters away, they offer smaller drinks of lower quality. This is definitely the one thing they need to improve to get a 100% rating because everything else is worthwhile.

A lovely spot for coffee or tea in Chalon-sur-Saône. We received a very warm welcome and the atmosphere is peaceful. Perfect for a relaxing break!

At Café 44, we enjoyed a hot chocolate with an orange and lemon tart. The two waitresses were attentive and very kind. We love charming places like this one.

We were looking for a tea room for a family afternoon tea. We were charmed the moment we walked in. We waited a little while because there were quite a few of us, taking a short stroll while keeping a watchful eye on the door, afraid of missing a few hungry guests leaving 😅 The place is warm and cozy. We settled onto the banquettes against the cushions, and there I ate a carrot cake!!!! A generous and delicious slice. The advice, the smiles—in short, I highly recommend this tea room. Don't change a thing, or just a little; I'll be back.

Definitely one of the best carrot cakes I've ever had! The place is small and charming. We'll be back to try other dishes and hot drinks.

New visit this Tuesday, October 21, 2025. Since my previous review, the 44 has changed management. Courtesy and quality are still there, and I will be back. New afternoon tea this Wednesday, October 23: the homemade scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam are delicious, as is the floral-scented "Memory" green tea. The owners are very friendly, and their tea room (and cafe) is a feast for the taste buds... and the eyes. Looking forward to tasting it again! P.S. What a shame to read the despicable and totally unjustified comment posted today by an angry customer who confused a tea room with a cafeteria and let off steam shamefully... A rich selection of teas (and coffees), delicious homemade orange cake, and a courteous welcome, all in a charming, cozy setting with soft, jazzy music. This first visit won't be the last... The "44" (Grand'rue) is a lovely establishment for a gourmet break. I highly recommend it. Best regards.

Very friendly and welcoming service. The decor is very nice and cozy. Clearly laid out, tidy, and clean. Delicious cakes 🎂 . The atmosphere is much more personal and much more pleasant than the Starbucks next door.
