Le Berry sur Pau

A Pau institution, a very nice brasserie. It's unlike any other restaurant.

The place is nice, a bit noisy, but it's a brasserie. Disappointed with the food. There were four of us. The others ordered, and they were offered steamed potatoes or green beans, but they asked for fries. When it was my turn, I ordered hot pork confit, and I was offered fries. I asked for green beans. When my dish arrived, I was surprised to find three slices of pork tenderloin on my plate, without sauce and very dry. For me, confit is pieces of meat cooked in fat, which is the definition of confit. I didn't really enjoy my dish. The meat was dry and tough. Luckily, one of my three companions had some sauce to make it all worthwhile. We ordered a bottle of wine, and it was placed on the table without being poured. When it came time for dessert, the waiter gave us a slip of paper from his order book with the remaining desserts and went to another table to take an order. I thought it was a joke. And the kicker was when we got the bill. I was charged extra for beans even though the waiter had offered them to my neighbor? This is the first time I've ever seen beans charged extra! The value for money is terrible. €35.50 per person is way too expensive. It's a shame, because the place really looked nice.

Le Berry is undeniably a Pau institution. The service is quick and efficient, and above all, the food is excellent! The andouillette sausage was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the steak tartare was impeccable. There's nothing to criticize about the quality of the ingredients or the skill of the chefs. You'll find several classic French dishes, all perfectly executed. However, the restaurant's positioning is questionable. Le Berry tries to present itself as a brasserie, but neither the prices nor the clientele truly reflect the brasserie spirit. It feels more like a haunt for trendy Pau hipsters who like to show off, eating lunch on a paper tablecloth. The presentation of the dishes is rather basic and doesn't entirely justify the prices, which I find slightly too high… regardless of the quality of the food, which is very good (I emphasize this because I don't want anyone to misunderstand me). A major drawback is the service… the nonchalant attitude of some of the waiters definitely needs improvement. The lack of decorum and professionalism is disconcerting, and putting your finger on the plate while serving it is simply unacceptable. At this level, perhaps they should consider a different career path. In short: I enjoyed the food and the decor, but the service was completely lacking and spoiled part of the experience.

Always top-notch. Super friendly team, excellent food. In my opinion: the best brasserie in Pau, not to mention far and wide (and believe me, I've been to a lot! 😂😂😂). It truly deserves its status as an institution.

So glad I had dinner at Le Berry! A brasserie that lives up to all its promises. Delicious and comforting food, attentive service, and a friendly atmosphere—everything is there for a pleasant time! If I'm ever in Pau, whether for lunch or dinner, I'll definitely be back!
