Le Bistro de Jean sur Saint-Malo

A recommendation from the travel guide that we are happy to pass on. Good bistro food at reasonable prices.

We came here looking for an alternative to another popular spot in St. Malo, and it was the best decision! The food was delicious, refined in every detail. The fish on a creamy risotto and the appetizers of oysters and gravalax were fresh and delicious. The owner (I think) was very kind and attentive to every detail, suggesting a good wine to pair with both the main courses and the cheeses. I highly recommend this charming restaurant.

Excellent address in Saint-Malo! From start to finish, everything was spot on. The dishes are beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, with generous portions and perfectly balanced flavors. The meat was incredibly tender, the purée silky, and the desserts were refined without being heavy — a real pleasure. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, true to what you expect from a great French bistrot, and the service is attentive, professional, and relaxed. A special mention as well for being dog-friendly — a big plus that makes the experience even more enjoyable. A wonderful moment around quality cuisine, using great ingredients and executed with care. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Saint-Malo.

When you're looking for a restaurant during your holidays in Saint-Malo, or anywhere else for that matter, you definitely don't want to end up in a place that caters to tourists... We were very lucky two years ago to discover Jean's bistro, truly. The decor is lovely, with old games that most of us remember, vintage comics, antique finds... it's a refreshing change from everything else you see, and we really enjoyed it. The food is, as mentioned, homemade; you can taste and smell it. We had already eaten very well two years ago, and again this past Friday. The dishes are well explained if you have a question, and it's the same for the wine; you get excellent advice. They know their products, their regions, their terroirs, and that's becoming rare these days. And having a set menu of starter, main course, and dessert, all homemade, for 29 euros is more than reasonable; you certainly don't find that in Belgium. Thank you and see you soon!

Le Bistro de Jean is highly recommended for anyone wanting to enjoy French cuisine. The menu is clear and offers just the right amount of choice. The dishes are truly fantastically prepared. I personally enjoyed the pea soup and the sea bream with risotto. Moreover, the service is attentive and welcoming, which makes the experience complete. If you are in Saint Malo, Le Bistro de Jean really shouldn't be missing from your list.

Second visit to Bistrot de Jean, the first in 2024. Another excellent meal from start to finish. Both the fish (redfish) and the meat (confit lamb) were cooked to perfection. The flavor combinations were very successful. We will definitely be back.

Spectacular! Off the tourist trap in St Malo, this is a gem. Very friendly staff with quick service. Food was outstanding. Steak was cooked perfectly rare (even though cut thin), risotto was perfect, pea soup was the best ever. Joe, the restaurant dog was an added bonus.

Superb restaurant, excellent cuisine. While visiting St. Malo, the restaurant was recommended to me by my hotel, and it certainly lived up to its reputation! The oysters were delicious, and the lamb was superb with a wonderful jus. A fantastic place, I highly recommend it!
