It's not what it used to be: What a shame...
Having known the Galopins restaurant for several years, I remembered the rib steaks or lamb shanks presented in a festive, almost ceremonial way, on beautiful wooden boards adorned with sauces and fleur de sel, accompanied by perfectly golden, crispy fries—the kind you can eat even when you're not hungry. This Saturday, wanting to relive such a moment, we made a reservation for 8:15 pm. Our first surprise: the rib steak, previously prominently featured on the menu, had been relegated to the back of the menu, sandwiched between the main courses and desserts. Was this a clue? A change of ownership in recent years? (It's true that our last visit was at least three years ago.) We took our order and were told that if we really wanted the rib steak, we would have to wait a long time... a bit surprising for a cut that's supposed to be prepared fresh and served with fries: was the grill not on? Was the fryer not plugged in? Anyway, we persevered. 25-30 minutes later, we were served a ribeye steak in a deep plate, swimming in its own juices... and in another deep plate, pale fries, clearly undercooked. While the meat tasted good (though without fleur de sel), the fries were more than disappointing: soggy and tasted like flour. We sent them back, specifying that we wanted golden fries, and if possible, cooked through. The same plate returned 5 minutes later, with the same fries, probably deep-fried for another minute in what looked like ancient oil: in short, still undercooked, still not golden, but with the added bonus of that lingering taste of old oil clinging to the fries. I gave up; the ribeye steak would be eaten without fries. Conclusion: While the complimentary gourmet coffee at the end of the meal was appreciated, I will still remove Les Galopins restaurant from my list of places to eat a superb ribeye steak and fries.
