Hidden behind a walk-in fridge at the back of Pizza da Vito the team behind Dirty Dick presents Moonshiner, a Prohibition-era speakeasy with dim lighting and low-slung banquets perfect to settle in for some innovative or classic drinks. Minimalist but somewhat art deco, the bar a tiny thing loaded with top-shelf Spirits, staff is friendly but well-versed in multiple languages while drinks trend affordable by comparison to similar concepts in Europe and the United States. Whisky-centric with several interpretations of the Old Fashioned, though a simple Mezcal Margarita is also executed with skill, those seeking something truly unique should consider the “Caffe Salentino” which riffs on the Italian favorite with French nuances and lingering island notes.

While in Paris for work, I tried Moonshiner late one evening on a recommendation. The concept is original, with a hidden entrance behind a pizzeria, a refreshing change from more traditional bars. The atmosphere is quite well done, with a polished 1930s style that avoids feeling overly touristy. The lighting is dim, and the music is well-chosen but a bit loud. The cocktails are decent, with some good options, though not all are particularly memorable. The prices are average, which is consistent with the venue. The service is generally efficient, but can be a bit rushed depending on how busy it is. The place fills up quickly (it's small), so the experience also depends on when you go. In the end, it's a good spot for the atmosphere and the concept, but it's best experienced once. It's a good option for a business trip to discover a slightly different kind of bar.
