We made a special effort to come here whilst on holiday in St Omer because the reviews were so good.
I understand of course that we were in a foreign country and that things may be done differently but we were so very disappointed.
My husbands samosas to start were pretty tasteless and the pastry was hard and my raita with prawns was a lot of raita with a few butterflied prawns on top. The prawns were good but far too much raita - I'm afraid it looked very unappetising.
Our two curries tasted mostly of curry powder (kind of curry from 1974!) and the peshwari naan had coloured hard dried fruit inside (like you put in Christmas cake) and pink dessicated coconut sprinkled on the top.
I understand 'different' but we didn't like it.
The decor was beautiful and the staff were lovely but the food was not very good I'm afraid.
Such a shame as we were so looking forward to it.

We came across this restaurant as it was close to our hotel, and thought we would have an Indian meal the next evening. I was not expecting too much but happily it exceeded our expectations.
The restaurant was full, which was nice to see, but now I know why. Excellent food, great service and very reasonable prices.
We are members of a curry club in our village near London UK, and once a month we go to a different Indian restaurant. We have been doing this for over 5 years, that's a lot of restaurants ! I would say that the Maharaja is comfortably in the top 10% of all the restaurants we have visited, and that's quite a feet.
By way of suggestion, the Tandoori prawns were amazing ( perhaps ask for the (excellent madras) sauce in a separate bowl as we did). The lamb was tender and again in a great sauce, the dips were great, the garlic naan was probably the best we have ever had, light and loads of garlic.
One thing of note, if you like your food spicy it's best to tell them, I think the French idea of heat is very different to a hardened UK curry head.
Overall, I would say it's a great restaurant and worth going out of your way to visit. It's opposite the railway station, about 15 mins walk from the centre of town.
One last word, the manager/owner was very enthusiastic and happy to go a little off piste with the menu to give you exactly what you want.
This looks like a long review, but we felt the restaurant deserves it. Go try it, hopefully you will have a lovely meal.

We are used to eating Indian food, but here we had the best Indian meal in a few years! It was really delicious. The service was impeccable and smiling and the atmosphere was as exotic as could be. An excellent discovery! Too bad we don't live in the area...

Discovery this afternoon!!!
We feasted. Tasty and generous cuisine. And fresh.
Beautifully decorated restaurant. And pleasant welcome and service. We will come back. It's certain.
Really reasonable price. Less than 65 Euros for 2 adult menus and 1 child with the total. From aperitif to desert.
