Chez Maya - Le Petit Grill Basque sur Saint-Jean-De-Luz

A pleasant Basque restaurant 100 meters from St. Jean Beach. Seafood and meat dishes, a decent selection of wines.

Pure vibes. Great service. Natural wine. Classic basque foods cooked perfectly. Stay for many hours. Bookings essential.

- The price of the appetizers, and the way they were presented, made me think they were main courses. - The main courses weren't served with bread. - The quality-price ratio is problematic. - The atmosphere and the feeling of being judged by appearances put me off ordering dessert. - The cider had a peculiar taste. No bubbles.

The service fell short of the restaurant's ambitions. The dishes themselves were quite good, well-cooked and generously portioned. However, the table service was simply nonexistent. There was no bread served with the saucy dishes (a glaring oversight for a French restaurant), and the waiter was unavailable (we tried twice to get his attention before giving up). The cider served at the table was over 11 months old, had lost all its fizz, and was rancid.

The food was impeccable, but the prices were typical of Paris, with the typical Marais style. The service was very amateurish, as is often the case in establishments where only the food is worthwhile… the portions were tiny, which is a real shame considering the prices. When all the starters are over €20 and the main courses over €30, all in a setting reminiscent of a Peña, you can't afford to make a mistake… And as for the wine, natural is fine, but not recognizing that it's a flawed wine is less so… especially when they treat the customer like just another clueless hipster. Don't be fooled by appearances… when I asked about the vineyard and they told me "fruity or full-bodied" 😅 and yes, I knew the winemaker's name just by looking at the bottle. If we hadn't asked for bread, we'd still be waiting for it.

Absolutely top-notch, perfectly cooked, high-quality ingredients, a sure bet.

Wow! Delicious, refined, and flavorful cuisine! The rather concise menu is complemented by daily specials on the chalkboard, and we absolutely loved it! Kudos to the chef and the front-of-house team, we'll be back!

I'm from Saint-Jean-de-Luz and I regularly eat at several restaurants in this beautiful town. I'm tired of seeing disparaging comments about the work of passionate restaurateurs. These people simply aren't "suited" to these places, so they can't judge the work objectively. We go to Le Petit Grill to: open our minds to wines we don't find at Nicolas, enjoy generous traditional cuisine and specials we won't find anywhere else (traditional Arroz, for example), and experience an atmosphere that takes us back a few years (I used to come to this restaurant for dinner 20 years ago with my parents, and my memories are still vivid) thanks to this new team. The noise is typical restaurant noise; for silence, there's the library. Thank you, and long live Le Petit Grill!

We ate very well, the staff were efficient, but I won't be back. The dining room is very noisy and makes you appreciate the food so much...

I am giving this a three stars because of the service. The food was great, I loved the sardines en entrée and my steak au poivre for the main dish. I, however thought that the waitress seemed a bit clipped in her responses to me and my family.
