02/09/2026: Fantastic authentic Basque restaurant in the heart of Saint Jean. Food is epic thanks to the owner-operator chef, team is enthusiast and fun, probably one of best braised cooked fish you can order in the region. Get a table now, this could easily be a Michelin-starred restaurant.

29/08/2026: Charming restaurant, we had a wonderful meal. The turbot cooked over charcoal and the vegetables were excellent, and the smoked sardines and fried anchovies served as starters were very well prepared. Attentive but unpretentious service.

23/08/2026: Arriving at almost 9:30 pm, we were expecting to be turned away, but it was quite the opposite! We were seated very well and received a warm welcome! The dishes were presented with gourmet flair and were excellent!! A delight from the aperitif, served with delicious little amuse-bouches, to the equally delicious and refined main courses! A place we highly recommend! The young chef is simply perfect!! The service was also perfect!

22/08/2026: We had an excellent time at L'Essentiel; the lobster pariada, the Pavlova, the service—everything was perfect. The terrace was very pleasant. We felt comfortable and had some distance from the other diners.

25/08/2026: We went for lunch. The service was a bit slow, but the waitress was very friendly to everyone. The burger was large and tasted good, although the meat was somewhat bland. The salad was also plentiful and tasty. The vegetarian wrap was a good portion and also quite good. They have very little seating, but it's recommended.

25/08/2026: Excellent service and attention; they welcome dogs both inside and outside. The opening hours are quite generous; we ate at 3:30 pm. Highlights: the special galette and vegetarian options. 10/10

30/07/2026: This restaurant had been recommended to us, but we unfortunately left disappointed. At €50 for a four-course menu, the price seemed reasonable. However, given the establishment's positioning, we expected much more attentive service. From the very first course, there was no presentation whatsoever. This was rectified later by a staff member. The presentation of the second course was rushed, the fourth was adequate, and no explanation was given for the dessert. Several details also gave an impression of a lack of care: the bread plates were still full of crumbs and were used as a base for the dessert coulis, the aperitif glasses hadn't been cleared even though the wine had already been poured, and the wait between courses was far too long. It wasn't all bad, though. The wine recommendation was excellent, as was the homemade sangria. Regarding the dishes, the zucchini accompanying the fish was undercooked, but that remains a subjective opinion. Overall, the plates were quite well presented. Finally, we were told the bill would arrive. After waiting about five minutes without any news, we had to go to the counter to pay. I imagine the employee sensed our annoyance, since she didn't ask us how our evening had gone. We won't be going back. That said, given the numerous positive reviews, I think this is probably an isolated incident and that this type of problem is occasional. Nevertheless, I feel it's important to bring these points to light so they can be taken into account and corrected for future customers. The goal isn't to criticize the establishment, but to share an experience that I hope will contribute to improving the quality of service.

26/07/2026: We had booked a table at this restaurant located in a beautiful house in the historic heart of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. We opted for an indoor table in a lovely dining room, which must be particularly pleasant in winter. The dishes we chose were excellent and original, from the amuse-bouche (which we didn't know about beforehand) to the dessert. The wines by the glass were very good. In addition, we would add that the service was professional and also lively, which we appreciated. We highly recommend this restaurant.

25/08/2026: I'm not usually a fan of Buddha bowls, but wow, this is amazing! The place is beautiful inside and has a really relaxing atmosphere. VEGAN/VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY! (I think they have vegan lasagna and Buddha bowls; I'm not sure if they have anything else. I'm not sure if the lasagna is only vegetarian, but I told them I was vegan and they said yes, in principle.) Also, something I've noticed is quite common here is that even if you don't order a drink, they still bring you a pitcher of cold water, and they even give you a portion of bread with the bowl (by the way, the bowl was €14, but the portion is generous). Very happy with the place.

22/08/2026: Spaniards: This place is great because it's away from the hustle and bustle of the main shopping streets, but only about a 3-5 minute walk away, not too far. The food is good. We had: a first course of entrecote steak with salad and natural fries, and another course of peppers stuffed with cod. The price was similar to Spain, and they also allow dogs on the outdoor terrace. Tip: Park on the right side of the train tracks; it's a free parking zone. Then you walk under the train tracks via a bridge/tunnel to reach the coast.

11/07/2026: We came to eat as a group of four. The waitresses gave us a warm and discreet welcome. The terrace is pleasant, right next to the market. Then came the time to order. The waiter (the oldest in the group, he'll recognize himself) cracked a few familiar jokes. Okay… We explained that my wife is allergic. The man's response, with a knowing laugh: "She's a pain!" A long, awkward silence… The waiter was starting to notice the discomfort. We took it in stride and decided to give the food a chance instead of leaving the table. My son and I ordered a ribeye steak between us, and my wife had a gazpacho. I don't remember what my daughter ordered… The verdict: The ribeye steak was good quality, cooked rare, but there was one drawback: The meat was too fresh, not aged enough (I'm not talking about matured beef). So even though it was rare, it felt like eating a piece of rubber. My wife's gazpacho was good but too vinegary. What a waste! We mentioned it to the waiter, who explained that it's a matter of taste and that we should have ordered the aged ribeye. Clearly, he enjoys inappropriate jokes but not constructive criticism. No comment… In short: The service was appalling and rude, and the food was subpar. The price was definitely too high. The next day we went to Alma (see review). It was like night and day.

18/05/2026: The hotel is very well located. The spa in the basement is lovely, with a pool and jacuzzi. Unfortunately, the television and refrigerator were broken and not repaired during our three-day stay.

13/05/2026: First and foremost, I want to thank Julien, whose personality makes this place so unique. I remember the place as being in PERFECT condition and spotlessly clean. I also appreciated the thoughtful touches that made all the difference: fresh orange and lemonade. The spa was magnificent, and the masseuse was lovely and very attentive to the client's needs, personalizing each massage accordingly. I also appreciated the charming Spanish housekeeper who took such good care of the guests. And I remember the very generous and high-quality breakfast. Thank you to the entire team. It was a very special weekend for us, and you all contributed to making it perfect.

22/07/2026: We hesitated to enter this golfers' domain, which we assumed was reserved, especially as a family with a baby. Quite the opposite, we were greeted by charming and attentive waiters. The atmosphere was relaxed. The food was good, reasonably priced, and offered a varied selection. The setting is also very pleasant. We will definitely return.

28/08/2026: Excellent value for money considering the prices in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The house specialty is hake, so that's the best thing to order while you're there. Good wine list and good desserts. The place is small, ideal for couples or small groups (4). In summer, it's advisable to book a few days in advance.
