Quai 38 sur Lille

This is a lovely restaurant tucked away in a back street of Lille. Wonderful seafood cooked with imagination. The couple running it couldn't be nicer, even though my french is close to non-existent. A great atmosphere.

We had dinner at Quai 38 with a reservation to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. The service and welcome were pleasant, no complaints whatsoever. The kitchen was responsive and lived up to expectations. The wait between courses was perfect, neither too quick nor too long. The staff was attentive to any questions or requests. The chef even came to chat with the customers, which was a nice touch! Perhaps it was just a one-off that evening, but we felt a little background music would have been nice. Aside from that, the atmosphere was superb, and the other customers' voices weren't too loud.

All dishes are à la carte. Very classy decor, very pleasant service. Although the dishes are excellent, they are far too expensive. We opted for starters at around €22, to which you have to add €10 to make them... main courses. A surprise awaited us with the desserts: no menu, but we were asked to choose from six desserts without being told the price. Around €12 for the cake 😁 when the waitress finally inquired. We left without ordering dessert. 🥺

Alas, it is becoming more difficult to find a great seafood restaurant in France as it is elsewhere. Fish is expensive now, and the margins are just too tough for most restaurateurs. Even old favorites of mine like La Coupole in Montparnasse, with its magnificent interior by Slavik, are not what they used to be. Expensive and not the freshest fish anymore. But then in a city off the tourist track like Lille one finds a true gem that reminds you of the old days. Quai 38 has won my heart and is now my go-to seafood table in France. The quality of the seafood itself is just superb -- fresh and sweet with the taste of the ocean. But then the chef's preparations add that extra magic that makes for a special experience. Try the Lobster Couscous. Innovative and delicious. The service was not only competent and discreet but quite charming as well. Our servers were 2 identical twin boys who made is feel very welcome. The wine list is well selected and the suggested pairings were real winners. Lastly, the chef himself came out,refilled our glasses and chatted with us. If you are only in Lille for a short stay this is one restaurant you definitely should not miss. We will be back-- often. Very highly recommended.

How can I put it? The welcome, the atmosphere, the service, the food, the quality of the ingredients—everything was perfect! Yes, the price is a bit steep, but considering the quality of the restaurant, it's definitely worth it. We'll be back without hesitation!

From the moment we arrived until the end of the meal, everything was perfect. The flavors were all there, from the appetizer to the dessert... I thoroughly enjoyed it. The chef came to greet his guests. The staff was very pleasant, without being intrusive. I highly recommend QUAI 38.

I ate the top three dishes of my life there (the other two are none of your business, of course!). Sweetbreads with squid and a lovely citrus sauce that went perfectly with it, served with mashed potatoes—it was pure bliss. A complete sensory experience, a sight, a smell, a moment worthy of a "Shrek-style rat." My god, there's no before, no after, there's only the moment, an instant, a bite. The service is charmingly kind and polite. Charming might sound a bit odd, but you'll understand once you're there. One of my favorite places. A restaurant you have to try, savor, and return to again and again. A Lille institution. Go for it.
