11/04/2026: Our time in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and surrounding areas has honestly been so special, and one thing that’s stood out everywhere we’ve gone is just how kind, patient, and welcoming everyone has been. Before coming, we made a conscious effort to start learning French because we really wanted to experience the country properly and show respect for the people and the culture. We’ve been trying our best to speak it wherever we go (with very mixed success!), and every single person we’ve met has met us with warmth, encouragement, and kindness. It’s made us fall madly in love with France. Martin & Cow felt like a perfect, exceptional example of all of that. From the moment we walked in—after a slightly awkward attempt at booking a table in French—the owner was so kind and put us completely at ease (even rescuing us in English when we ran out of French!). There’s something instantly warm and genuine about the place. There’s no menu, which we loved. You just trust the owner, and he takes care of everything—pairing wines and creating the most incredible charcuterie and cheese boards based on your tastes. When everything arrived, he took the time to explain each cheese and meat, where it came from, and even the order to eat them in so you get the best from each one. And honestly… we’ve never tasted anything like it. The cheeses in particular were unbelievable—each one somehow better than the last. It genuinely felt like an experience rather than just food, and at times we were all just sitting there smiling (and slightly in disbelief!) at how good it was. The whole atmosphere was just as lovely—calm, relaxed, and so respectful. Our corgi was welcomed just as warmly as we were, and the owner kindly brought him some water, as has been the case everywhere we’ve visited here. We were also really touched by how thoughtful other guests were—one couple even checked with us before bringing their own dog in, which says everything about the kind of place this is. What really made it, though, was the owner. Running everything on his own, yet still taking the time to chat, joke, and make everyone feel welcome. You can feel how much he cares about what he’s doing, and it makes you feel lucky and honoured to be a part of it, even just for an evening. As we were leaving, our corgi even gave a little wave goodnight—his own way of saying thank you—which felt like the perfect end to such a memorable evening. This wasn’t just a great meal—it’s a memory we’ll all carry with us. It perfectly captured everything we’ve loved about being here. We’ll 100% be back (and already can’t stop thinking about that cheese).
