08/09/2026: A very charming little restaurant with high-quality, generous portions. A huge plus for the warm welcome, friendliness, and smiles of the waitresses – they made us want to come back! It was our first evening in Marseille, and we felt right at home ☺️

28/09/2026: Chez Etienne is an institution, and there's always a queue outside, but we easily managed to get in for dinner, arriving shortly after opening. Right from the start, they made it clear: only cash is accepted, but no problem, there are ATMs nearby. We were greeted by the mischievous yet extremely efficient Nasser, a colorful character who was always on the go and didn't miss the opportunity to gently tease my companion with the kind of cheeky banter that characterizes Marseillais in the collective imagination. We were quickly seated with other customers at a table with a red checkered tablecloth (old-fashioned decor, of course). The place filled up very quickly, with a mix of regulars and tourists. On the wall, faded photos of the restaurant's history and the celebrities who have dined there. The noise level increased as the evening progressed. It's always packed, very noisy, and there's a crazy, joyful energy all around. The oven is working at full blast, and the pizzas come out uniformly crispy (i.e., not just on the edges). The seasoning is perfect, with just the right amount of garlic and herbs. There are only two topping choices, but that's more than enough: cheese or anchovies, with the option of a half-and-half. Both are very good, but I have a slight preference for the lighter anchovy pizza. It's worth noting, because it's not obvious: the pizzas aren't sold by "dish" but by "person." So, a "2-person" pizza is equivalent to two quarter pizzas per person for two people (which is one full pizza). It also seems that there are different pizza sizes depending on the number of people. The salad is also very generous. Next to us, our table neighbors ordered cuttlefish, which looked exquisite. The meat dishes also appeared to be of high quality. Indeed, the restaurant isn't just a pizzeria; it also serves other dishes. Despite the crowd outside and the quick service, we weren't rushed to pay the bill or clear the table. The staff is unpretentious but always very attentive and helpful. Dining at Etienne's was a truly unique experience, well worth the trip.

25/09/2026: Always a treat and an institution

17/09/2026: I ordered 6 oysters and 6 shrimp with a Pornstar Martini. Honestly, everything was excellent, especially the oysters. For dessert, I had tarte tatin and a vanilla ice cream sundae, which was wow! I've never had any so good; you can really taste the vanilla.

15/09/2026: Everything is fresh. Good environment at the port. Very nice English speaking staff.

26/07/2026: The waiter was a short, red-haired man—sorry for the word, incredible!—nothing to complain about. Quick, efficient, and full of humor, as he should be. Perfect food, except that the bartender and two other waiters acted like they were running a corner shop.

05/04/2026: I am VERY disappointed. The manager was on, very on. Then two scenarios come to mind, either it is a good restaurant that has a positive atmosphere and they have food they are proud of or it is absolutely terrible and they are just trying to get customers who are willing to have a "good" dinner. We ate burgers that were dry and not tasty, and when we were going to pay they said they did not take cards, only cash. "Luckily" there was an ATM that you could withdraw cash 1 meter from the restaurant. The minimum was 20 euros with a fee of just under 5 euros. As I could see in my receipt from my card, it looks like the restaurant owns the ATM. It is one of the wildest things I have ever experienced. We were there in early April.

01/03/2026: The best couscous I've had in Marseille. The portion is more than enough for one person. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Fast service.

29/05/2026: A relating tasty meal after a hit mornings sight seeing. Simple traditional food and good value. A lovely memory. The Maîtresse d’ is a very welcoming and a special lady.

28/09/2026: A truly dreadful experience. Here, they're not really talking about food: we mostly got the impression that we were being served microwaved dishes. The couscous arrived in barely two minutes, the brik with egg about thirty seconds later. It's hard to imagine, under these conditions, that it was freshly prepared. The result was disgusting. We left almost everything because it was so bad. And with a few lamb skewers, the bill came to €21, with a price that didn't match what was on the menu. We even wondered if we were going to get sick after eating the little we had tasted. Catastrophic value for money, a tourist trap feel, and no desire to return. Even a Garbit couscous is far better. At that price, serving what looks like microwaved food is simply shameful for a bill of €40 per person including wine!

21/09/2026: A wonderful discovery in Marseille's Old Port! I tried the merguez couscous at La Kahena and it was absolutely delicious! A very hearty, generous dish bursting with flavor. The portions are truly generous, perfect for a convivial and satisfying meal. I highly recommend this place for couscous lovers, especially if you like to leave with a very, very full stomach!

21/08/2026: grumpy old ladies work here. Don’t bother wasting your time

14/08/2026: I went there at lunchtime and wanted to have a sandwich. The lady was so friendly and welcoming; she showed me her menu and explained everything in detail. I chose an absolutely delicious sandwich, which she made fresh for me. When I sat down at a small table outside, which was very sunny, she offered me a shady spot belonging to the restaurant next door. That was so kind, and I've rarely experienced such wonderful and attentive service. Thank you so much!
