From the very beginning, everything was seamless — starting with the ease of the reservation system. The restaurant is located in a charming seaside town, and it beautifully embraces its historical roots. Being right by the water adds a magical touch, but the interior is just as captivating.
The atmosphere inside is warm and full of character. The vintage photographs hanging on the walls are simply beautiful — and after reading about the restaurant’s history in the menu, seeing those photos brings the whole story to life. It’s like stepping into a living memory, where past and present come together in the most elegant way.
The menu is thoughtful and well-curated, and you can tell great care goes into how each dish is prepared and cooked. The flavors were absolutely on point — every bite was memorable. The service was equally impressive: attentive, friendly, and professional from start to finish.
I’ve been thinking hard, but I genuinely can’t find a single flaw. It was simply perfect in every way.
06/07/2025: My family was so excited to eat at La Mere Germaine based on reviews and word-of-mouth in various Facebook groups. Unfortunately, our experience was not good. While we did like the location by the sea in Villefranche, the food and the service were severely lacking. The waiter completely forgot to bring my husband’s drink; we never received it. One of my children ordered a burger from the kids’ menu, and we requested the meat to be cooked “à point” for medium (medium rare would also have been ok), and the burger was cooked beyond well done and was awful. The first appetizer arrived, and then my daughter’s meal arrived. She was the only one with food, and we waited quite a while for the second appetizer. By the time our main courses arrived, my daughter was done with her dinner. The timing was so poor. The ceviche appetizer was ok, but the lobster ravioli appetizer was a (bad) joke for the quantity and price. Not to mention that the ravioli itself didn’t taste very good. The main courses were disappointing as well. We’re foodies and have dined at excellent restaurants throughout Paris and the French Riviera. We didn’t have one bad meal—until we dined at this restaurant. Nice and Villefranche have so many restaurants that are better, and some are also less expensive. I happily pay a lot for good food and service, and I received neither. I surmise that La Mere Germaine is surviving based on its history and reputation, but the actual experience is a let down for sure. I would recommend going elsewhere.

30/12/2025: An excellent address in the heart of Villefranche-sur-Mer with a view of the port.
We attended a jazz evening with Dona Flor and had a wonderful time.
The food service is excellent, the service impeccable.
The welcome is very warm and friendly.
We will definitely be back.
I highly recommend this magnificent place 🌟

I have no idea about the quality of the food, but the waiters are aggressive (a small blonde woman and a dark-haired man in their forties).
My mother and I were verbally attacked by their friend, the owner of the restaurant “Le Serre,” and without even trying to understand the situation, they came and yelled at us to defend her, even though she was, of course, indefensible.
Therefore, it's best to avoid this establishment to punish their indefensible behavior towards customers.
12/10/2025: Great place and service 🧡 The food was also really delicious, however the profiterole was a bit dry so that takes the stars down. BUT we will come again and would definitely recommend the place.

18/01/2026: Everything is perfect at this restaurant: the welcome, the service, the appetizers, the meat, and the dessert—nothing to complain about. High-quality cuisine.
I highly recommend it.
Bonus: valet parking.
17/01/2026: Reputation and good food aren't everything… The quality of the meat, the restaurant's specialty, is undeniable, but the rest leaves much to be desired! The side dishes—grilled potatoes and green salad—were very basic and lacked any refinement. As for the service, the friendliness and welcome clearly need improvement, and don't expect a quick turnaround for a carafe of water or bread!
And to top it all off, the bill was quite hefty, without the complimentary digestif that could have left us with a more positive impression… In short, we'll wait a while before returning, or perhaps not…

10/11/2025: It's very, very, very bad.
The pissaladière was cold, the pastry was dry and tasteless, like it had been thawed from frozen, and the stuffed pastries were tasteless.
It doesn't smell homemade at all, it's disappointing.
Never again.
It's just a food truck.
And the prices are like a restaurant!

19/10/2025: A place where it's good to take your time. For me, it's more in the morning after breakfast for the Welcome guests. As for the food, I can't answer because we can't call it a kitchen; it's not a restaurant. However, you can have a cheese or charcuterie board with your drink.

22/08/2025: We had a wonderful welcome at Le Serre, which we discovered last night. The staff and the atmosphere are so friendly!
We enjoyed a delicious tomato and mozzarella toast salad, followed by a perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented salmon tartare. To round off this delicious meal, we had an exquisite peach pavlova. What a treat! Bravo to the chef! And thank you to the entire team for their warm and friendly welcome. We will definitely return to Le Serre during our next stay in Villefranche!

12/11/2025: The only café in France where you get a torrent of insults from the waitress. This woman's nervousness, spitefulness, vulgarity, and rudeness are astounding. As a resident of Villefranche, I like to stop by from time to time for a drink, alone or with friends. I don't go there very often, so they don't know me. Until now, I had always been well received, by a young man, a middle-aged gentleman, or a lady with short blond hair. But this morning, I encountered an aggressive harpy who unleashed all her venom and a string of obscenities on me. I am a lady of a certain age, who came to relax and support the local businesses. I was so shocked that I won't be going back anytime soon! A disgrace to this village!
The following text is the comment left on the town hall website.
Beautiful location, very pleasant welcome. However, I feel compelled to share on the town hall website a terrible experience I had this morning at the Café de la Paix. Given that this establishment is located within the town limits, I feel it's important to bring it to the attention of the Mayor. Having lived in Villefranche for a year, I occasionally, though admittedly quite rarely, stop by the Café de la Paix for a drink while playing the lottery. Always warmly welcomed until now by the young man, the older gentleman, or the short-haired blonde woman, I never imagined that one day I would be greeted so aggressively and subjected to a barrage of insults and obscenities! I ordered an aperitif and asked if it would be possible to have some side dishes, which I was willing to pay for. The violent response from this hysterical woman shocked me so much that I asked for a refund because I no longer wished to remain in the establishment. She replied, and I quote, "Sit on your ass." I'd never experienced anything like it in my entire life. A real slob, and incredibly rude. I'm over sixty, I'm a mother and grandmother, and in my world, we show politeness, good manners, good upbringing, courtesy, and elegant speech. I think it's best not to drink when you work in a café! In any case, this person is completely out of place.

12/11/2024: Este restaurante entrega. Gran menú. Buena comida. Cenar por dentro o por fuera. Gente maravillosa dirige este restaurante. Finalmente encontramos una deliciosa Boulliabase en Villefranche. En el casco antiguo. Gran servicio, gran carta de vinos. Te encantará.
30/10/2024: Superbe petit restaurant familial sur la rue du Poilu, produits frais, plats délicieux et généreusement servis, rapport qualité prix imbattable dans ce coeur de village ultra touristique. Les tables en terrasse permettent de s'immerger dans cette petite rue à l'architecture de village italien, un vrai dépaysement. Le service est tout simplement au top, alors bien sur je recommande.

31/03/2024: My mum and I are customers of the tea room since day 1 and we used to love this place. Unfortunately 3rd unpleasant experience in a row: waiter is completely rude and poor customer service. We won’t support this local company place anymore! A shame for Villefranche notoriety!

30/03/2024: Best hotel experience we've had to date, fantastic view, friendly and professional staff who do everything to ensure you have a simple and nice stay. Perhaps the flowers in the breakfast restaurant need to be changed a little more often, but this is in the petty department.

Then take a walk up the alley between Spallato and Wine Pier.
Don't be put off by the basic looking place or staff.
Sit down, you will be attended to by very friendly & efficient waiters.
The food is very original & authentic.
Prepared and presented beautifully by the chef.
