LE VIRAGE

Montvalent

17/08/2024: TL;DR; I welcome the effort to make an event out of an archaeological site, combining history and modern business, but overall, there's lots to improve. For more details, read below. ***** The idea, while potentially interesting, has not undergone the necessary development. Let's start with the arrival. It was clear that we arrived primarily at a commercial event, not the one they had advertised in their leaflet. Once inside, there was no music—nothing to get you in the mood of a Gaelic event. Somehow, I was expecting some convivial entertainment similar to the Asterix and Obelix cartoons, but nothing of that sort. The "best" attraction has been some stands with artisans, but their capacity to involve people was IMHO limited: the sole person doing so was the guy making fibulas, and the lady doing the pearl of glass; the latter just because she needed somebody to keep the fire on during her demonstration. There were other guys too, generally good, but they couldn't/wouldn't get people involved in their activities. One side had several wooden games, most in poor condition, and no one to teach how to play. The only entertainment provided was a historical explanation of the site and the historical facts about the Gaelic site, which took place before the starter was served. That was interesting, but possibly too long and not digestible by all (I can imagine how bored the small kids could have been). Let's discuss the Gaelic dinner. Indeed, the dinner lived up to the hype, but should we repeat it? Not at all. The starter was a bowl of cereals mixed with peas, some slices of rillettes, and a (delicious) canard prosciutto. The main dish was lentils mixed in with other cereals, accompanied by marinated industrial chicken and pork. The taste was okay, but again, nothing special. We received a small sample of spiced wine, and while we didn't expect it to be as good as it is now, the poor quality of the red wine rendered this shot unpalatable. A slice of bread with Roccamadur cheese reheated in the Gaelic oven was given after, possibly the sole thing I've seen being cooked in the oven. We skipped the dessert as at 10:30 still wondering around with the cheese was indeed too much given the context, a flat dinner with nothing of the promised animation unless the explanation given prior to the starter was the "animation". Last but not least,. A 50-cl bottle of water (not even refrigerated) sold for one euro was the cherry on top. At a dinner where the entrance fee was 38 euros, they should have included at least one bottle, or at the very least, a jar of water, which was given only later. But nothing was said when, at dinner time, I went there to buy four bottles because the drink menu left on the table left me under the impression that no drinks at all were included.
